About GardenBarn

After many years of growing plants as a professional nurseryman at a local nursery, Laurie, with his wife Carol, turned their small home into a nursery. Carol did the propagation, and Laurie did the growing. The main variety of plants grown were Fuchsias. They sold them at markets and fairs around the Wairarapa. These times were very memorable for Carol and Laurie as they shared the day with their three daughters, who helped at the markets and fairs.

In 1998, Carol and Laurie decided to take the plunge and set up their own business. They bought a house sitting on one hectare of land at 179 High Street, Masterton; the current location of GardenBarn now.

Originally GardenBarn was called High Street Plants, where Carol and Laurie sold what they grew under the carport, with an ironing board as a counter-top and a small old drawer as an honesty box. Soon, they constructed a small shop and decided to increase their product range, moving into other garden-related products as a "one-stop garden shop".

After more years of continued success and expansion, High Street Plants was more than just a small plant store. So, Carol and Laurie decided to change the name from High Street Plants to GardenBarn, to reflect the change of direction and increased range of plants and garden products that GardenBarn now sells.

The growth of GardenBarn has been exponential over the years, mainly due to most plants being grown on-site. Thankfully, they have a great team to help with this growth.

GardenBarn grows over 40,000 plants annually to sell in their shop, helping to eliminate the middleman and maintaining their policy of having "everyday low prices". Ultimately, growing these plants enables GardenBarn to offer the highest quality plants for the lowest price possible.

Due to the purchase of adjacent properties, GardenBarn now makes up two hectares of land, with one hectare for housing and one hectare for production and retail buildings.

Looking ahead, Carol and Laurie have decided to continue expanding into the future, with exciting times for not only Carol and Laurie but also the employees and GardenBarn's much appreciated customers!
